ONE OPEN THE BONNET OR TELL ME QUESTION ASKED BEFORE THE TEST.

ONE SHOW ME QUESTION TO BE ASKED AT SOME POINT DURING YOUR TEST.

Q1. Open the bonnet and identify where you would find the engine coolant and how you would check the correct level?

Open and secure the bonnet identify the engine coolant and explain you would check it was between the minimum and maximum levels.

 

Q2. Open the bonnet and identify where you would find the brake fluid and how you would check the correct level?

Open and secure the bonnet, identify the brake fluid and explain you would check it was between the minimum and maximum levels.

 

Q3. Open the bonnet and identify where you would find the engine oil and how you would check the correct level?

Open and secure the bonnet identify the dipstick and explain you would take out the dipstick, clean it with a clean cloth, re insert it to the holder then remove it and check oil level was between minimum and maximum markings.

 

Q4. Tell me how you check the power steering is working before starting a journey?

Gently move the steering wheel left and right with the engine off and explain the steering feels heavy, then start the engine and again move the steering wheel left and right and the steering should feel much lighter.

 

Q5. Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on your car?

Explain you would press the brake pedal and look for reflections in garage doors, windows, other cars etc, if there are no reflections I would ask someone to stand behind and check for me.

 

Q6. Tell me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working?

Explain you would turn on the lights and walk around the car checking all bulbs are working correctly.

 

Q7. Tell me how you would check your direction indicators are working correctly?

Explain you would press the hazard warning button, walk around the car checking all bulbs are working correctly.

 

 

Q8. Tell me how you switch your headlights from dipped beam to main beam and how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car?

Operate main beam and explain the blue light on the dashboard indicates main beam is on.

 

Q9. Tell me how you would switch on your rear foglights and explain when you would use them?

Switch on dipped headlights then operate foglight switch, foglights should be used when visibility is less than 100 metres.

 

Q10. Tell me how you would check your brakes work before starting a journey?

I would test them as I set off, they shouldn’t feel spongy and the car shouldn’t pull to either side.

 

Q11. Tell me where you would find the information for your tyre pressures and how they should be checked?

Information is in the manufacturers manual, tyres should be checked with a reliable pressure gauge when they are cold, also checking the spare and refitting the valve caps.

 

Q12. Tell me how you would check your tyre tread depths and the general condition of the tyres?

A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges, will have atleast 1.6 mm of tread depth around the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

 

Q13. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted to provide protection in the event of a crash?

Head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part is in line with the tops of the ears and eyes and as close to the head and neck as is comfortable.

 

Q14. Tell me how you know if there is a problem with the anti lock braking system?

A warning light would illuminate on the dashboard.

SHOW QUESTIONS – TO BE CARRIED OUT DURING THE TEST

When its safe to do so :

1. Wash and clean the rear windscreen.

2. Wash and clean the front windscreen.

3. Switch on the dipped headlights.

4. Set the rear demister.

5. Demist the front windscreen.

6. Operate the horn.

7. Open and close your side window.

 

Getting one or both of the questions wrong results in one minor fault.
